Collective rights in Metis History.
-In 1982
The Metis people lobbied for recognition of Metis rights in Canada's Constitution, in section 35 which recognizes the Metis as one of Canada's aboriginal peoples with rights, along with the Indian and Inuit people.
-In 1990
Alberta's government enacted legislation under which the Metis revived permanent settlements as a land base, with the right to mange their own affairs. In addition the right of the Metis people could participate in the development of oil and gas creating more jobs.
-In 2003-2004
The supreme court ruled that the Metis have the right to hunt and fish as one of Canada's aboriginal groups, meaning they need no license. These rights recognized the unique relationship to the land of the Metis.
